The federal government has approved a plan to eradicate the smallmouth bass from the Miramichi watershed.

The plan calls for a biodegradable poison to be used in Miramichi Lake, Lake Brook and parts of the Southwest Miramichi River.

The bass were illegally introduced into Miramichi Lake in 2008 and are considered a threat to native species.

Public Health reported four new cases of COVID-19 yesterday here in New Brunswick.

There were three cases in the Fredericton region and one in the Bathurst region.

Ther are currently 61 active cases in the province.

The provincial government is encouraging New Brunswickers who received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine before May 1st to book an appointment for a second dose.

Appointments can be made through one of province’s two health networks or at a participating pharmacy.

Once 75 per cent of eligible New Brunswickers have received a second dose of a vaccine, the province will lift all of its COVID-19 restrictions.

In the Miramichi Valley Baseball League Chatham downed Caraquet 10-0 in a game that went just six innings due to the mercy rule. The Ironmen visit Caraquet tonight.

Dalhousie beat Chatham Head 4-1 last night. They meet again tonight in Dalhousie, while Tracadie edged Miramichi 2-1 in Tracadie.

In the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Lightning got by the Islanders 2-1 to take a 2-1 series lead.

Montreal is home to Vegas tonight in Game 3 of that semi-final series, which is tied 1-1.

In the NBA playoffs, the Bucks beat the Nets 104-89 to force a game 7 in that conference semi-final series.

And in the majors, the Yankees doubled up the Blue Jays 8-4.

The move means that Canadians from anywhere in the country are welcome to visit New Brunswick as long as they have had at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

The next step was triggered after it was announced that more than 20 per cent of New Brunswickers 65 and older had received their second dose of vaccine.

The case against Ethen James Harnish is moving forward following a preliminary inquiry.

The 22-year-old facing a murder charge in the death of Brandon Martin.

Harnish returns to court on July 5th to set a trial date.

And the RCMP is asking for the public’s help locating a missing 51-year-old Napan man.

Ben Dick was last seen on North Napan Road near a wooded area at around 7 Tuesday evening.

He is described as being five-foot-eight, weighing around 220 pounds. He has short grey hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt and jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP at 523-4611.

The goal triggered the first step in the province’s re-opening plan.

As of today, several restrictions have been lifted. Among those, that anyone travelling from Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Cumberland County in Nova Scotia or the two border regions of Quebec, will not have to isolate or be tested for COVID-19 upon arrive.

Premier Blaine Higgs said yesterday that the province could open up to the rest of Canada this week.

The original target was July 1st as long as 20 per cent of New Brunswickers 65 and older had received their second dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

But that target is expected to be hit today or tomorrow.

That would allow all Canadian travellers who have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to enter the province without needing to isolate.

Marissa Shepherd has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and arson in connection with the death of 18-year-old Baylie Wylie in 2015.

The now 25 year old had been facing a second degree murder charge.

She had previously been convicted in 2018, but that was overturned on appeal.

Two others are also serving time in connection with Wylie’s death.

Shepherd will be sentenced on Aug. 19th.

That case is in the Bathurst region and involves a person in their 50s who is a contact of a previous case.

There are currently 90 active cases in the province.

Miramichi-Grand Lake MP Pat Finnigan will not run again in the next federal election.

Finnigan was first elected in 2015 defeating incumbent Conservative MP Tilly O’Neill-Gordon.

He was re-elected in 2019 by just 370 votes.

Finnigan says he wants to devote more time to helping his wife run their business in Rogersville.

And the federal government has announced that all Indigenous people can now apply to reclaim their traditional names on passports and other government identification.

The move is a recommendation from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

All fees will be waived for the process.

A plan to eradicate the invasive small mouth bass is one step closer to reality.

The Working Group on Smallmouth Bass Eradication wants to use a biodegradable poison to remove destroy the bass in Miramichi Lake, Lake Brook and part of the Southwest Miramichi River.

The project has now been relieved from further environmental assessments at the provincial level.

The bass were illegally introduced into the lake in 2008.

Officials say a forest fire southwest of Bouctouche has been contained.

Water bombers were brought in to fight the blaze, which at one point was estimated to be around 30 hectres in size.

No houses in the area were directly threatened and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

And the federal Liberal party has gained a new MP here in New Brunswick.

Fredericton MP Jenica Atwin, who was elected as a Green in the last federal election, has crossed the floor to join the Liberals.

Atwin said a disagreement within the part over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict played a role in her departure.

Provincial Green Party leader David Coon said he was disappointed with Atwin’s move but also said the MP felt abandoned by the Green leader.

The Golden Knights will face the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup semi-finals. Vegas doubled up Colorado 6-3 last night to take that series 4-2.
